Frequently Asked Questions

Starting therapy usually comes with a few practical questions. Below you'll find answers to some of the things people most often want to know about working with us, including choosing a therapist, insurance and fees, couples counseling, scheduling, and what to expect when getting started.

If you don't see your question here, you're welcome to reach out. We'll be happy to provide information about our services, availability, and scheduling.

Finding the Right Fit

How do I know whether Mandy or Madison may be the better fit?

Both Mandy and Madison work with adults, but they bring different experience and approaches to therapy. You can learn more about each of us on our About page, or tell us a little about what you're looking for when you contact us. We'll use that information, along with current availability, to help you determine who may be the best fit.

What issues do you work with?

We work with adults experiencing concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, men's issues, personality disorders, self-esteem, stress, and major life transitions. Therapy is individualized, so you don't need to know exactly what category your concerns fit into before reaching out.

Do you work with children or teens?

No. Our practice is currently focused on adults and couples. Mandy provides individual and couples counseling, while Madison provides individual counseling for adults.

Do I need to know exactly what I want to work on before starting therapy?

No. Many people begin therapy knowing that something isn't working or that they don't feel the way they want to feel, without being able to clearly explain why. Part of the work can be understanding what's happening, identifying patterns, and deciding together where it would be most helpful to focus.

Fees & Insurance

How much does therapy cost?

Private-pay rates vary by therapist:

  • Mandy Schulzke, LPC — $160 per session
  • Madison Monter, LAC — $125 per session

Mandy provides both individual and couples counseling. Madison provides individual counseling for adults.

What insurance do you accept?

We currently accept:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield — Mandy and Madison
  • Aetna — Mandy and Madison
  • UnitedHealthcare — Mandy only; select plans
  • Lyra — Mandy only

Insurance networks and benefits vary by plan, so being insured by one of these companies does not necessarily mean your specific plan is in network. We will obtain the information needed to verify your benefits before your first appointment.

Can I use insurance for couples counseling?

No. Couples counseling with Mandy is private pay only at $160 per session. We do not bill insurance or provide superbills for couples counseling.

Do you offer free consultation calls?

We do not offer free consultation calls. We’ve found that a brief phone conversation usually isn’t long enough to get a meaningful sense of whether a therapist will be a good fit or what working together will actually feel like.

Instead, the best way to get started is to complete our contact form with some basic information about what you're looking for, your availability, and your insurance if applicable. We'll review that information and respond with availability and next steps. Your first session then gives you and your therapist the time to begin getting to know each other and determine whether the fit feels right.

Starting Therapy

How do I get started?

Complete the contact form and tell us a little about what you're looking for, your general availability, and whether you plan to use insurance. This gives us enough information to review your request and respond with the most relevant information about availability and next steps.

What happens after I contact you?

We'll review the information you provide and respond based on the type of counseling you're seeking, your availability, and insurance when applicable.

If we have an appointment that may work for you, we'll help you get scheduled and send you an invitation to our secure client portal. You'll complete your intake paperwork there before your first appointment.

Do you offer both in-person and telehealth appointments?

Yes. We offer both in-person sessions at our Glendale office and telehealth appointments for clients located in Arizona. Availability for each may vary by therapist and appointment time.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

Your first session is an opportunity for your therapist to get to know you, understand what brings you to therapy, and begin identifying what you'd like to work on.

You don't need to arrive with everything figured out or know exactly what to say. We'll ask questions, talk about what's been happening in your life, and begin developing a direction for therapy together. It's also your opportunity to get a better sense of your therapist and whether working together feels like a good fit.

Policies & Other Questions

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, we ask for at least 24 business hours' notice. Appointments canceled with less than 24 business hours' notice, as well as missed appointments, are subject to a $100 late cancellation/no-show fee. Insurance does not cover late cancellation or missed appointment fees.

Do you provide EMDR?

Yes. Both Mandy and Madison are trained in EMDR and may incorporate it into therapy when it is appropriate for a client's needs and treatment goals. We don't approach EMDR as a stand-alone service or assume that it is the right approach for everyone. Treatment is individualized based on what will be most helpful for you.

Do you provide services for court, custody, or other legal matters?

No. Our role is to provide therapy, and we do not provide custody evaluations, fitness-for-parenting assessments, or other forensic services. We also do not take on clients for the purpose of providing opinions or recommendations for legal proceedings.

If you are seeking counseling primarily for a court, custody, or other legal matter, a provider who specializes in forensic services will generally be a more appropriate fit.

Do you complete FMLA or disability paperwork?

No. We do not complete FMLA, short-term or long-term disability, or other paperwork intended to establish or certify a client's ability or inability to work.

If you anticipate needing this type of documentation, we recommend discussing the requirements with the medical provider or other professional responsible for evaluating and certifying your work status.
